What is live footage?

i know it sounds like a daft question but i'm currently doing an assignment based on multimedia components and i was just looking for a more complexed answer to the question explaining thoroughly what actually live footage is. I know the obvious answer so please share a more complexed explanation if you have one. thank you very much.
